Learning Targets:
Evolution of Psychology: Psych Approaches
Research: The Scientific Method, Design, Processing, and Ethical Issues.
1. Wilhelm Wundt is credited with being the founder of modern experimental psychology when he founded a lab at the University of Leipzig Germany in 1879.
2. Tichener, Watson, James, and Skinner are all important early psychologists.
3. Understanding the differences between the various approaches or perspectives - behavioral, biological, cognitive, humanistic, psychoanalytic, & sociocultural - is the key to understanding psychology.
4. The modern definition of psychology combines the scientific study of behavior and mental processes in humans and other animals.
5. Observation is the most important aspect of psychological research.
6. Operationalism means to define our variables in the manner in which we are going to measure them.
7. Correlation measures degree of relationship between variables and ranges from -1 to +1. Correlation does NOT imply causation.
8. Experimental, correlational, & descriptive methods all have strengths & weaknesses in describing human behavior.
9. Descriptive statistics describe the data gathered in research, while inferential statistics allow us to draw conclusions about how this data can be generalized to a larger population.
10. Following ethical principles is vitally important in any kind of psychological research.

Learning Targets:
Understand the common cognitive errors responsible for perpetuating the 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology.
  1. Word of Mouth: Spread across generations by verbal communication. Confuse statement's familiarity with its accuracy. 
  2. Desire for Easy Answers & Quick Fixes: Look for techniques that offer foolproof promises, or rapid results. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  3. Selective Perception & Memory: Tendency to focus on "hits" rather than on "misses". We see things through our own set of distorting lenses- warped by our biases & expectations, & that lead us to interpret the world in accord with our preexisting beliefs. 
  4. Inferring Causation from Correlation: Incorrect to conclude that if two things co-occur statistically then they must be causally related to each other.
  5. Post Hoc, Ergo Propter Hoc Reasoning: Since A precedes B, A must cause B.
  6. Exposure to a Biased Sample: Psychologists only have access to the sample of people that see them for problems.
  7. Reasoning by Representativeness: Evaluate the similarity between two things on the basis of their superficial resemblance to each other.
  8. Misleading Film & Media Portrayal: Mass communication (especially television, radio, newspapers, & the Internet) depicts things as more sensational than they really are. Exaggeration of a Kernel of Truth: Not entirely false, but their truth is overestimated, magnified, and/or amplified.
  9. Terminological Confusion: Some phraseology, wording, or nomenclature lend themselves to mistaken inferences.
Essential Questions:
1. What are the common cognitive errors responsible for perpetuating the 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology?
2. How does the scientific method function and protect us from failing victim to unfounded myth.
3. What is the best way to keep others from falling victim to psychological myths?
4. What does Veritas Liberat mean?

Agenda:

1. DO NOW: "Misleading Film & Media Portrayal" is the cognitive error that accounts for the most myths in the book. Why do you think that is?

3. Matching Cards in groups & the Matching in class Presentation to assist students in being able to:
  • Match The Myth with the determining cognitive error.

  • Truth from Myth (quick quizzing over the hard to believe truths & the myths)

Agenda:
1. DO NOW - Find your name on the screen & your seat in the classroom. 
Mr. Duez will post a set of questions on the screen for you to answer after the bell rings. He'll go through and call attendance while you do:

WHO ARE YOU?
  • What is your name? 
  • Why did you decide to take AP World History?
  • What is your favorite restaurant to eat at?
2. Discuss the answers to the DO NOW questions with your partner. The partner will introduce you to the class & explain the answers you have chosen. So the partner needs to write down the responses. We will most likely finish these next class at the beginning in bigger classes.

3. Psychology Pre-Quiz. On a separate sheet of paper, write down your answers.
