FRIDAY:
Mr. Duez will have a substitute. Aidan is sick with the flu. Mrs. Duez has been out the last 2 days and today is my turn on duty with the little guy.

Students will watch ABC Primetime Miligram Experiment.
Students will take notes showing their understanding of the dvd, the miligram experiment and the new version that the study looks at. Mr. Duez will grade this as a formative grade and it should go towards improving quiz averages!

On Monday we will being Chapters 5 and 6. Please begin reading them and taking notes. Mr. Duez will post the targets on Friday for this unit.

Test Prep - Chapter 4 Sensation & Perception

Good luck in studying for your test on Chapter 4 - Sensation & Perception for Thursday. There is a good chance we will have a fire drill during 2nd period. Hopefully it will be during the beginning and during our review. 

I thought I would help your preparation by sending you the essays (you have to write them fresh in class though):

Essay Complete one full essay. You may do one, two or three of the others for extra credit.

1. From a distal light source to the brain, sequentially trace a visual stimulus that registers as the color red for a person. Trace the visual stimulus through the eye and nervous system. Why does a person see “red.” What is “red?”

2. Discuss the psychological question of nature versus nurture when it comes to taste/smell. Why do you like your favorite food? Be sure to include in your answer an understanding of Olfactory System, taste buds (and 4 receptors of taste), taste sensitivity the Gustatory System and sensory interaction.

3. How are tactile and thermal data routed to the brain? Explain this by choosing an injury you have had in the past. Explain the gate-control theory and how the injury registered pain.

4. A giant redwood falls in the forest. You are standing nearby. Describe the “sound” you would hear. Would there be a “sound” if there was no one there to hear it? Be sure to include theses concepts in your answer: auditory localization, amplitude, wavelength, purity and pitch.

Dress Like a Teacher Day

I had to share this because it is simply awesome. Ryan in my AP Psychology class dressed up as Mr. Duez today. He did a very good job, too! He even had the cane and orange MS wrist band - just wish you could see the canes a little better. And wish my wrist band was also showing. But, I must say... we are one good looking pair! :)

3 Major regions: hindbrain, midbrain, and forebrain. Hindbrain develops first and both hindbrain and midbrain handle essential functions.

Thalamus is a relay station.

Hypothalamus regulates basic biological drives (hunger/sex).

Lymbic System is involved in emotion, motivation and memory.

Cortex is cerebrum's convoluted outer layer, which is subdivided into occipital, parietal, temporal, and frontal lobes.

·          Right Brain/Left Brain: Cerebral Laterality

Cerebrum is divided into right and left hemispheres connected by the corpus callosum. Studies of split-brained patients and perceptual asymmetries have revealed that the right and left halves of the brain each have unique talents.

Brain Unit Extra Credit is due in class on Friday, Sept. 23rd. You have two weeks to complete this work. No work will be accepted late.

You may do none of this. You may do 1, 2, or 3 of them.

If you choose to do all 3 assignments, you will get extra test scores of 100 (for perfect work), 90 (less than perfect), 80 (missing elements), 70 (missing KEY elements). There are no other scores available. All work will be presented to the class on Friday, Sept. 23rd.

An anchored boat is pretty safe for sure. But it doesn't do much while anchored. Someone has to have the courage to captain it and take the adventure!

Review the Learning Targets for Chapter 2, The key terms/vocabulary, and objectives from Chapter 2.
1. Review of Chapter 2 in class. Mr. Duez will discuss Research Methods and take questions from the class. We'll be sure to understand correlations,

Learning Target: 
Explain how psychologists use consistent research principles to test a hypothesis and conduct experiments.

Agenda: 
1. Students will have 10 minutes to work in groups to create a skit that shows the fundamentals of research. These are made up scenarios and the groups will act as if they have done the research. Each person in the group will stand before the class and model such concepts as hypothesis, independent/dependent variable, experimental and control groups, conclusion. Use positive or negative correlation to explain your conclusion.
2. Lecture and Discussion on Chapter 2 Research Method (will continue the discussion with questions prior to exam on Thursday).
3. Quiz on Chapter 2 Research Methods. Last 15 minutes of class.

Test on Thursday - last 60 minutes of the period. We'll discuss the chapter and review concepts for 30 minutes before the test. Come prepared with questions you might have regarding the chapter objectives.

Agenda:
1. PsykTrek 3 - Modules, Quiz, and Test. Mr. Duez will pull cards for student responses.
2. Notes and discussion revolving around Chapter 2 Research Methods.
3. Students will work in groups of 5 to create a psychological experiment simulation. They must use vocab and terms from Chapter 2 and model an experiment for the class. We will present these first thing on Tuesday.
