Agenda: Week of October 17-21, 2011

We are studying Chapter 7 & 8 "Cognition" Memory, Language, and Thought.
Learning Targets.

If you learn only 6 things from this chapter for the AP Test...
1. Cognition is the study of mental processes.
2. STM seems to be limited to 7+ - 2 items at any given time.
3. The differences between encoding, storage, and retrieval are important.
4. Models of LTM deal with how we organize information that we need to know.
5. Problem solving involves applying what we know in an organized way to issues that we face.
6. Language is a complex system of communication that allows us to use complex symbols to talk about things in the past or future, not just the present.


MONDAY - October 17, 2011

1. Notes, Discussion and Introduction to Cognition and Memory.
2. Video: "The Woman Who Could Never Forget."
Article about her that will help understand Jill Price better.
Those who did not take the test on Friday will take it at the beginning of this period.
Quiz on Chapter 7 is Friday.

1. DO NOW QUESTION: "What is your impression of Jill Price - the Woman Who Could Not Forget?" (things to consider, do  you feel bad for her? would you want that ability? do you believe studying people who have super memory could lead to advanced theories and thoughts about the human brain - and even possibly cures for diseases like Alzheimer's?)
2. Mr. Duez is out today. Students will read the article for this chapter: http://appsych.mrduez.com/2011/10/chapter-7-article-flavor-of-memories.html
follow the directions and turn it in to the substitute.
3. If time remains, students will watch the 60 minutes video about "Endless Memory"

THURSDAY - October 20, 2011 BLOCK DAY

1. DO NOW QUESTION: "Name the three human memory stores in the order in which information would encounter them. Using the Atkinson and Shiffrin (1971) model, describe the capacity of each system, the durability of storage in each system, and the format of information storage in each system. Also identify the processes that transfer information from one system to another."
2. Notes and Discussion on Chapter 7 Cognition & Memory.
3. Start/Continue/Finish the 60 minutes video story on "Endless Memory."

2. Quiz on Chapter 7 during last 15 minutes of class.

For next week, study chapter 8 Cognition: Learning and Thought. 
We will have our quiz on Chapter 8 on Thursday and the test for Chapter 7 & 8 on Friday.
