WED/THU -  How does 50 Great Myths group the myths? Why did they group them in these chapters in that way?; Notes, Video, & Discussion: Introduction to 50 Great Myths of Popular Psychology; Cooperative groups break down the myths - Focus on "Cognitive Errors" that create the myths.
FRI - Quiz over 50 Great Myths; Review Quiz Answers

Unit 1 - Evolution of Psychology, Research Methods
1. Psychology is a science.
2. Science can be used as a process to determine truth.
3. Science & Psychology has changed and evolved over time as we have learned more.

Essential Questions:
1. What is psychology?
2. How can taking the AP test help?
3. How can the website help me prepare?

Agenda:
1. DO NOW - Find your name on the screen & your seat in the classroom. 
Mr. Duez will post a set of questions on the screen for you to answer after the bell rings. He'll go through and call attendance while you do:

WHO ARE YOU?
  • What is your name? 
  • Why did you decide to take AP World History?
  • What is your favorite restaurant to eat at?
2. Discuss the answers to the DO NOW questions with your partner. The partner will introduce you to the class & explain the answers you have chosen. So the partner needs to write down the responses. We will most likely finish these next class at the beginning in bigger classes.

3. Psychology Pre-Quiz. On a separate sheet of paper, write down your answers.

Assignment:
Fill Out the Student Survey - due by next Tuesday.
Quiz over 50 Great Myths of Popular Psych this Friday.
Test on 50 Great Myths next Wed/Thu

Agenda:
1. DO NOW: Pick up the Psychology Success Plan from the front table.
(also finish any of the introductions we may not have done on day one. class size varies)

Also, continue student introductions from Monday. (We never get these finished in one day)

2. What is Psychology? How does 50 Great Myths explain Psychology as a science?

A. Lecture & Discussion from the notes 
Students will take notes & discuss.
Also Shepard's Table "hands on" cutouts.
Students will manipulate these two handouts to explain the illusion:

B. Listen to Dr. Lilienfeld discuss why he wrote the book, write down his reasons and why 50 Myths is important in his mind.

C. Watch Lilienfeld discuss the big myths that are most surprising. Which myth surprised you the most and why?

2. From Womb to Tomb: Myths about Aging and Dying; Myths 6-10
3. A Remembrance of Things Past: Myths about Memory; Myths 11-14
4. Teaching Old Dogs New Tricks: Myths about Intelligence & Learning; Myths 15-18
5. Altered States: Myths about Consciousness; Myths 19-22
6. I've Got a Feeling: Myths about Emotion and Motivation; Myths 23-26
7. The Social Animal: Myths about Interpersonal Behavior; Myths 27-30
8. Know Thyself: Myths about Personality; Myths 31-36
9. Sad, Mad, and Bad: Myths about Mental Illness; Myths 37-42
10. Disorder in the Court: Myths about Psychology & the Law; Myths 43-46
11. Skills and Pills: Myths about Psychological Treatment; Myths 47-50

Each group will discuss the myths
Which myth most surprising? 
Why do people believe the myth?

Then use the handout:
50 Great Myths broken down by "Cognitive Error" responsible for the Myth
Do these make sense? 
Do they help you analyze the book?
