Psych in college...
This is a photo from a former student that is taking Psychology in college at Sam Houston University. :)
A little different from our cramped quarters in 1207, isn't it? A couple of those students might be out of dress code. :)

Textbook Message
If you still have not gotten a textbook...
Of course you could always purchase a book if you wished. The textbook room will be open every day after school for the first week for those students that did not attend Flight School. We will open at 2:50 and close at 3:15.If a student has early release then they must see Ms. Burton before school to fill out a textbook request form and we will have them pick them up the next morning.Any student that has any lost textbook(s) from the previous year will not be allowed to check out textbooks until the books have been paid for.
I had several students do that last year. The book:
Textbook: Weiten, Wayne. Psychology: Themes & Variations. Wadsworth Thomson Learning; Fifth Edition, 2001.
However if you purchase newer versions you will be fine. The text isn't substantially different and I rarely even refer to the page numbers in our text. It is essential to do the reading because it gives you a baseline of understanding. Teamed with our notes and class work, you will be fine. We also use a healthy dose of PsycTrek 3.0 in class. That is a digital learning tool from the textbook. It's pretty awesome.

Greetings New Students (and former students who I will have the pleasure of seeing again)
Hope summer has treated you well. Flight school is this week and many students have been getting their schedules. I have heard from a few of you and your parents already. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the course.AP Psychology is really going to be a great class this year and I have been working all summer to make it better than ever. If you happen to have the course in the fall, do not despair. The AP Test will be in the spring, however my students typically perform the same whether they have taken the class in the fall or spring. The only difference is that in the past there have been less students who took the exam from the fall semester. Percentage wise scores were almost identical.
This year I am putting into place a new system that will make review for the exam even easier. So it is not a bad thing to have the course in the fall. You can do it. I have two AP Psychology classes in the fall and two in the spring. So it's even.
We will start learning Unit 1 which is the first two chapters PLUS chapter 14. The calendar on this site already has the Tests, Quizzes, and assignments pretty well up to date. So you can check ahead to see where that stands. (Obviously things can change and will change, especially when our administrators start changing the bell schedule around, but it is a schedule I plan to stick to as closely as possible.)
The first two chapters are introductory and set the stage for the rest of the course. The first is the History/Evolution of Psychology as a subject. The second chapter covers Research Methods, which is vital for the AP test and also the techniques used (even a little math!) will be helpful throughout the course. New this fall, I am adding Chapter 14 - Personality to the mix. The reason? In the past it has been a 'take home' test. I want to focus more on it this year. It is a small part of the AP test, but deals with some of the most interesting and fun discussions. Freud and Psycho-dynamic theory will be the focus there.Looking forward to seeing some old faces of those of you who have had World History with me in the past. And I am really looking forward to meeting the new students. I am lucky and privileged to get to know you all.
Enjoy your last bit of summer. When Monday comes to start school, we'll be getting after it straight away.

You must tell them what will happen to us... say goodbye. But when you say goodbye, say it as if you are reaching through the phone and holding their hand. Let them know that if they let go of that hand, you will die. We must shame them into sending help." - Paul Rusesabagina

Quote: "Don't let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do." - John Wooden
Agenda:
DO NOW QUESTION: What project would you choose at this point for a video project presentation?
- Bystander Effect
- Asche Conformity Experiment
- Classical Conditioning
- Operant Conditioning
- Piaget - Conservation
- Selective Attention
- Awareness Test - Who Cheated?
- Invisible Rope Trick
Memory and Gender
Conduct an investigation to see whether there are links between gender and the ability to remember. Devise a set of 20 flashcards, 10 of which should have single-word nouns, such as "ball" or "cloud," and 10 with numerals, such as 10 or 68. Compile a sample with equal numbers of girls and boys before sitting participants down individually and showing them the flashcards one-by-one. After you have shown a participant all the cards, engage him with a distraction task, such as a two-minute conversation with you. Then get him to write down as many of the words and numbers as he can recall. Mark the results pages clearly to show whether it was a male or female respondent before comparing the performance across genders.
The Psychology of Feeling Watched
Compile a random sample of your classmates to participate in this study, which examines the feeling people get when they are being watched. Take the names of your participants and divide them into two equal groups: A and B. Designate group A as the one that you will watch during the experiment. Find an area where you can ask your participants to stand with their backs to you, such as at the bottom of a staircase. Instruct group A to stand at that spot and face the wall for 30 seconds. Watch them from a concealed spot near the top of the staircase. Then instruct group B to stand with their backs to you, but do not watch them. Have the participants verbally report to you whether they felt as if they were being watched. Study your results to see whether your sample could correctly identify whether they were being watched.
Music and Heart Rate
Look for how different styles of music are reflected in the participants' heart rates and consider whether certain styles or tempos of music lead to faster or slower heart rates. Find a separate area where you can carry out your experiment with respondents one by one in isolation. Sit your participant down in a chair before strapping him up with a heart rate monitor and a set of headphones. Play different styles of music at the same volume for two-minute bursts, noting the effect of each style on the respondent's heart rate. Expose the respondent to two minutes of silence or low white noise in between music segments to allow the heart rate to normalize. Examine your results for any patterns.
Optical Illusions
Carry out a study to see how different people initially interpret optical illusions. Seat your sample as a group, but instruct them not to speak for the duration of the experiment. Project or hold up posters of optical illusions and get each participant to write down what he sees in the optical illusion. Collect the answer sheets before allowing participants to discuss the illusions. Mark up the scores for each of the illusions to see if one image prevails over the other or to detect any patterns, such as by gender, for witnessing one aspect of an illusion over the other.

1. Discuss the Video Project. Proposal for your project is due by the end of the week. Write up an explanation of the project, participants, and your inital hypothesis.
2. TedTalks - Your brain is more than a bag of chemicals - by David Anderson.
Modern psychiatric drugs treat the chemistry of the whole brain, but neurobiologist David Anderson believes in a more nuanced view of how the brain functions. He illuminates new research that could lead to targeted psychiatric medications -- that work better and avoid side effects. How's he doing it? For a start, by making a bunch of fruit flies angry. (Filmed at TEDxCaltech.)
