Targets - Chapter 14 and 15 Abnormal Psychology:  Psychological Disorders & Treatments

  • what abnormal psychology is and how it differs from normal psychology
  • the major types of psychological disorders
  • what we know about the causes of these disorders
  • how mental health problems are treated
  • different types of mental health workers
  • various approaches to psychotherapy



We only meet Monday, Tuesday and Thursday this week due to TAKS testing. Mr. Duez is having a review session on Thursday morning at 8am in his classroom for any seniors wanting help with reviewing for the AP Psychology test.

1. Do Now Question: Comparing Social Psychology Theories Daryl Bem's self-perception theory suggests that behavior determines attitudes. This counterintuitive notion is reminiscent of the James-Lange theory of emotion. How are the two theories similar yet different from each other?

Class Time Today: 9:27 to 11:22
1. TEST CH 14-15-16.
2. Begin AP Review - Students will pick up Practice Test #1 after they are finished with the test.
3. What is the AP Test for Psychology like? How should you prepare?
4. Students will get a 100 question practice AP Psych test. This is due in class on Thursday. We will have a few minutes to work through it in class today and on Thursday. Students will get the answers to the practice test and discuss them in groups and with Mr. Duez.
--We will also finish "A Brilliant Madness" in class. I understand that you did not finish the last few minutes with the sub last time--

Agenda:
There will be AP Tutoring in the morning from 8am to 10:30am in Mr. Duez's room for seniors.
Class time: 11:02 to 12:00
1. Review for AP Exam. Students will pick up the answers for AP Practice Test #1 and discuss in groups.
2. Students will be in cooperative groups and will work on the AP Psych practice test #1, 10 questions at a time.
3. We will play review games.

4. Students will get AP Practice Test #2, which we will work with on Monday. Next block day (Thu) we will take a 100 question practice test in class for a real test grade. Students will get the test back on Friday and be able to find their answers and return them to class to improve their grade on that test.

Targets - Chapter 14 and 15 Abnormal Psychology:  Psychological Disorders & Treatments

  • what abnormal psychology is and how it differs from normal psychology

  • If you learn only 7 things from this chapter for the AP Test...

  • 1. The Diagnosis and Statistical Manual of Psychiatric Disorders is the handbook used by mental health professionals to diagnose psychiatric disorders.
    2. There are many types of disorders, but they all involve debilitation that makes routine life situations difficult.
    3. Schizophrenia is not dissociative identity disorder. It is a disorder that involves a break with reality and auditory hallucinations.
    4. Personality disorders are the most difficult disorders to diagnose and treat. The most common treatment is medication (most have side effects).
    5. Medication is effective as a treatment, but it is often combined with a form of “talk therapy” to provide a more complete therapeutic technique.
    6. Behavioral and cognitive therapists are very popular forms of “talk therapy.”
    7. Freudian therapy, though well known, is not utilized much anymore.

    IF YOU LEARN ONLY 5 THINGS IN THIS CHAPTER FOR THE AP TEST:
    1. Social psychology refers to how groups influence the behavior of an individual.
    2. Attribution theory refers to how we make judgements about others.
    3. Obedience and conformity both refer to the influence of others on our behavior.
    4. Milgram did studies in social psychology that seem to be on the ethical edge.
    5. Behavior can be influenced by the presence of a group.

    Learning Targets - Chapter 11 - Development

    1. Cognitive development refers to the ways in which our ability to think and reason change over our life spans.
    2. Two theorists important in the area of cognitive development are Jean Piaget & Lev Vygotsky.
    3. Social development refers to the changes in our ability to interact with others as we age.
    4. Our primary caregiver provides us with our earliest social cues.
    5. The stages of prenatal development.
